The City of Reno Takes a Leap into the Blockchain Frontier

Reno, Nevada, often overshadowed by its glitzy neighbor Las Vegas, is stepping into the spotlight with an innovative endeavor. Mayor Hillary Schieve has announced plans for the city to establish its own decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and a unique token, Reno Coin. This ambitious project is moving forward in collaboration with TQ Tezos, a pioneer in producing cutting-edge Tezos-based solutions.

Reno DAO: Art, Crypto, and Community

According to Mayor Schieve’s recent appearance on the Tez Talks podcast, the creation of the Reno DAO aims to utilize the Tezos blockchain to monetize artistic creations, potentially reshaping the local economy. She emphasized the city’s potential to harness cryptocurrency, suggesting it could address some of Reno’s long-standing issues and frustrations.

NFTs: The New Wave of Monetizing Art

One of the more tantalizing aspects of this initiative is the city’s plan to digitize Burning Man artworks as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The first NFT will be based on the concept of the iconic Space Whale sculpture, acknowledged as a hallmark of Burning Man culture. Mayor Schieve highlighted the project’s dual goals: aiding in the city’s financial ambitions while fostering local art.

“It’s gonna take a long time to adopt, we know that,” Schieve remarked, laying out a vision where locals could use crypto for everyday services, even as mundane as sewer payments.

The Vision of Local Innovators

The initiative is attracting attention from local innovators as well. Theodore Clapp, a researcher who contributed to the initial Reno DAO design, expressed his reasons for selecting the Tezos platform. He shared his investigative journey through various blockchain technologies, and hallelujah, he landed on Tezos!

The Best Fit for Sustainability and Growth

“I’m not biased, I’m not like a Tezos maximalist or anything,” Clapp clarified, showcasing his unbiased analysis of blockchain technologies available for DAO developments. His approach involved careful consideration of scalability, transaction fees, and the platform’s long-term viability.

As Reno aims to walk before it runs in the world of cryptocurrency, the city’s leadership hopes this pioneering venture will encourage local engagement and understanding of blockchain technology, potentially setting the stage for broader acceptance and innovation.
