The Global Divide: Metaverse Reception in Wealthy vs. Developing Countries

When it comes to the buzz surrounding the Metaverse, it turns out that enthusiasm is not uniform across the globe. According to a recent survey by Ipsos for the World Economic Forum, people in developing countries are positively frothing at the mouth for what VR/AR technology promises, while those in wealthier nations seem to take a more ‘meh’ approach. Who knew that augmented reality could be so—well—divisive?

The Survey Breakdown: Who’s Excited?

Out of over 21,000 adults surveyed across 29 countries, a whopping 52% claimed they are familiar with the concept of the Metaverse. More importantly, half of those respondents are pumped about integrating this digital oasis into their daily realities. The envy-inducing ranking shows China, India, Peru, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia leading the pack—with positivity levels soaring above 66%. Can we say ‘party in the virtual universe’?

China Takes the Crown for Metaverse Positivity

China emerges as the undisputed champion of Metaverse enthusiasm, with a staggering 78% of respondents excited about using it regularly. Meanwhile, India closely follows with 75%. Looks like the Great Wall now has some competition in keeping enthusiasm contained. On the flip side, high-income nations are lagging behind—Japan scored the lowest at 22%. At that rate, it might as well be the Great Wall of Lack of Excitement!

Who Knew Familiarity Mattered?

It seems that fewer folks in high-income countries have explored what the Metaverse can offer. In fact, France, Belgium, and Germany saw a mere 30% or less recognizing its existence. Oops! Meanwhile, Turkey steals the spotlight again with 86% familiarity, while Poland is still stuck trying to figure out what a Metaverse is—with only 27% in the know. But hey, at least someone is keeping up with the cool kids!

What Areas of Life Will the Metaverse Impact?

According to the survey, those excited about the Metaverse see its potential in various facets of life. Respondents from developmental powerhouses like South Africa, China and India are vocally optimistic about how it will transform virtual learning, entertainment, and even remote surgery. Talk about a digital glow-up! In contrast, Japan, Belgium, and France have their heads buried in the sand, scoring low on the belief that the Metaverse will significantly impact day-to-day activities.

Crypto Enthusiasm Mirrors Metaverse Sentiment

It’s not just the Metaverse; people in developing countries are also more enthusiastic about cryptocurrencies. Amid currency devaluations, a report from cryptocurrency exchange Gemini highlighted that respondents from India, Brazil, and across the Asia Pacific were more likely to have jumped into crypto investments in 2021. It appears that economic hardship fuels a thriving digital economy, while those cushy high-income nations remain blissfully unaware.
