Game On: Com2uS Enters the Blockchain Arena
During Korea Blockchain Week 2022, Kyu Lee, the president of the mobile game developer Com2uS, unveiled a bold new vision for gaming: an innovative blockchain known as XPLA, designed to embody the principles of Web3. Lee argues that users should enjoy gaming without the usual strings attached, stating, “It was almost a no-brainer, [wouldn’t] you like to play a game that gives digital world ownership?” Of course, who wouldn’t want to be the king of their own pixelated empire?
Free to Play, Free to Own
XPLA, a name that cleverly combines ‘explore’ and ‘play’, aims to stitch the fabric of the gaming community alongside a rich array of Metaverse experiences. What really sets this new platform apart from traditional systems? The folks at Com2uS want to eliminate the tedious gateway for new players that often involves buying NFTs and setting up wallets that feel more complex than a Rubik’s cube.
Revolutionizing User Experience
Lee highlighted the team’s innovative take on onboarding gamers into the blockchain space. They propose a system where players can start their gaming journeys hassle-free. Players can initially dive in, earning virtual currency as they level up, which can later be converted into tokens once they’re invested enough to create their wallet. Think of it as a gaming trial run without financial commitment—the Netflix of the gaming universe, if you will!
Enhanced Retention Rates
- Increased player engagement due to simplified processes
- Retention rates surged with the removal of initial ownership hurdles
- Focus on organic growth rather than constant cash grabs
As Lee charmingly noted, “We also noticed that the retention [rates] increased significantly just because we omitted the ownership paths paid to the assets.” Sounds like a great plan—because who wants to explain crypto to their grandma anyway?
The Future is Definitely GameFi
GameFi, with its play-to-earn model, has proven resilient through tough crypto conditions. Lee observed a swell in new players eager to join this free-for-all frenzy of earning while playing. After all, who wouldn’t want to level up whilst lining their pockets?
Smart Tokenomics
While the landscape has its shine, Lee did voice concerns about some current trends. He criticized companies releasing tokens that serve only one game. Instead, Com2uS champions a better path with their C2X Web3 gaming platform, which introduces a main governance token complemented by sub-tokens tailored for each game—much smarter than keeping all your poker chips in one basket.
Looking Ahead: The Road to Launch
Since launching five games on the Sequel X platform as of April, Com2uS has their sights set on a total of 20 games by next year’s end. And the buzz doesn’t stop there—the testnet for XPLA is poised to launch soon, with the mainnet just around the corner. Talk about a busy calendar!
As blockchain technology rapidly converges with various industries, Lee emphasizes the need for protocols distinguishing themselves through meaningful content creation rather than the underlying tech. It’s all about getting back to what matters most: great games. The future may just be a virtual reality headset away!
