Hedera Challenges Facebook: The Battle for a Decentralized Internet

The Decentralized Revolution

In a world where companies like Facebook have dominated the digital landscape for years, one decentralized public network is stepping up and saying, “No more!” Meet Hedera, a platform that aims to reclaim the internet for its users. Their mission? To ensure that the power of the web shifts back where it belongs—into the hands of everyday internet users.

Hedera Takes a Stand

This summer, Hedera made its intentions clear with a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal, provocatively labeling Facebook’s Libra initiative as mere imitation. The ad boldly stated, “Thank you Facebook Libra. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Mance Harmon, the co-founder and CEO of Hedera, even shared his vision for a decentralized future with Facebook’s David Marcus back in February 2018. Apparently, the message was lost in translation.

The Governance Model That Sets Hedera Apart

One of the standout features of Hedera is its governing council, which comprises 39 distinguished organizations spanning 18 unique industries and 11 global regions. Think names like IBM, Deutsche Telekom, and Tata Communications—big players with serious expertise. Here’s the kicker: these members don’t profit from Hedera’s network, and their roles are term-limited, ensuring no one gets too comfortable in their seats. Unlike Facebook’s Libra Association, Hedera is striving for a level of transparency and accountability unheard of in the social media sphere.

Consensus Service: The Game Changer

Hedera isn’t stopping there. Its recently announced Consensus Service, developed in partnership with Hyperledger Fabric, allows private applications and distributed ledgers to leverage Hedera’s public network for achieving decentralized trust. The goal? A staggering 10,000 cryptocurrency transactions per second—eventually escalating to an ambitious 100,000. No forks and more stability? Count us in!

The Call for a Decentralized Future

With over 2,000 developers currently active on Hedera’s testnet and a launch of Open Access on the horizon, the potential for innovation is truly exciting. Harmon’s letter last month underscored this sentiment, emphasizing how Facebook’s move into the digital currency space has validated Hedera’s unique approach. His message was clear: while welcoming Libra to the playground, he firmly believes that Hedera’s governance, security, and performance standards set it apart as a superior alternative.
