Akoin’s Journey: From Concept to Pilot
The world of cryptocurrencies is rife with ambitious projects, but few have the cultural impact of Akoin, spearheaded by none other than the Senegalese-American superstar, Akon. Originating as a visionary idea to empower African economies, Akoin (AKN) has transitioned into a real-life application, making significant strides in the Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) in Kenya.
Successful Pilot Phase
Launched back in November 2020, the pilot program for Akoin was linked with its listing on the Bittrex crypto exchange. Fast forward to now, and the pilot has proven successful, garnering “great enthusiasm” according to Jon Karas, the President and co-founder of Akoin. Mustn’t we all just love a little enthusiasm in our lives?
A Bright Future: Full Deployment Ahead
The full roll-out of AKN in MMTC is scheduled for July, with the potential to envelop a community of over 5,000 hospital workers, 2,000 merchants, and about 35,000 residents. The Akoin team is optimistic, forecasting that transactions involving AKN could surpass $5 million! Now, that’s a nice chunk of change!
Why It Matters
This isn’t just a token being launched for the sake of it; AKN aims to revolutionize the way commerce operates in the MMTC. Plans are in place for 20,000 workers to exclusively use AKN by the end of 2021. By 2022, it’s hoped that AKN will be the go-to digital currency for the facility, processing between $1.7 and $2 billion annually. Talk about an ambitious attitude!
Practical Uses of AKN
So, what exactly will AKN be used for? Get ready for a plethora of practical applications:
- Receiving salaries
- Microtransactions
- Peer-to-peer transfers
- Airtime top-ups
All these uses transform AKN from mere digital currency to a lifeline for everyday transactions. It’s like turning water into wine—except it’s more like turning digital tokens into real-world utility.
Partnering with Baanx: The Future of Payments
In a forward-thinking move, Akoin has teamed up with @BaanxGroup. This partnership aims to broaden the scope of AKN by enabling users to spend their tokens in the global economy. Lynn Liss, Co-Founder & COO of Akoin, emphasized the importance of this partnership in revolutionizing digital asset payments.
Beyond Kenya: Future Aspirations
The success in MMTC is just a warm-up act. Akoin is eyeing bigger fish, particularly the ambitious Akon City project in Senegal, which is poised to act as a beacon of innovation and blockchain integration on the continent. Moreover, the Akon Foundation plans to establish a blockchain incubator at the MMTC, nurturing future digital projects—exactly what we need in a fast-paced digital age.
