Atari’s Bold Move into Blockchain Gaming
In a strategic partnership that could send ripples through the gaming industry, Atari, the iconic gaming titan known for classics like Tetris and Pac-Man, has inked a licensing agreement with blockchain startup Animoca Brands. This partnership, announced on December 18, promises to breathe new life into two beloved mobile titles—RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch and Goon Squad.
The Game Titles in Focus
Atari’s hit mobile game, RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, boasts an impressive 19 million downloads globally. The game has recently benefited from exciting updates including the addition of a Water Park expansion and a quirky collaboration with social media personality, “Foodgod” Jonathan Cheban. And let’s face it, if you can’t build a rollercoaster with a side of gourmet snacks, are you even living?
Global Reach with Some Exceptions
The licensing agreement provides Animoca the rights to globally distribute these blockchain adaptations, with the notable exception of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau. This vast majority of the globe is certainly no small playground for Animoca to indulge in.
The Financials Behind the Deal
So, what did Animoca Brands shell out for this collaboration? Reportedly, they offered Atari a minimum guarantee of $250,000, but here’s the kicker—it’s payable in shares of Animoca’s stock. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! This agreement is set to run until March 31, 2022, showing a commitment from both parties to explore this new venture, with plans to integrate non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into their offerings.
Exploring New Frontiers Together
Beyond the licensing deal, Atari and Animoca have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to delve into mutual opportunities, creating a playground for innovation in gaming, product development, and the ever-mysterious world of blockchain technology.
Atari’s Recent Cryptocurrency Ventures
Atari isn’t just jumping on the blockchain bandwagon for the fun of it. Earlier this year, the company’s stock surged by over 60% after announcing plans to invest in cryptocurrency. They didn’t stop there; Atari also launched its own digital currency—Atari Token—and even partnered with an online crypto casino. It’s a wild world out there, and Atari is poised to be at the forefront of gaming’s next big evolution.
