Aussies are Gifting Crypto: The Trend for Christmas 2023

Christmas Crypto Craze

The holiday season is upon us, and it seems that Australians are embracing the idea of gifting digital assets. According to a recent survey conducted by Crypto.com, over 26% of crypto users in Australia are contemplating giving some form of cryptocurrency or crypto-related presents this Christmas.

Survey Snapshot: Who’s Spending?

In a poll of 2,020 Australians aged 18-59, the results are fascinating. More than half, about 53%, indicated they are open to purchasing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH) as festive gifts for their loved ones. Talk about a merry wallet!

What Kinds of Crypto Gifts Are on the List?

The survey didn’t just stop at cold hard crypto. It also revealed that crypto merchandise could be all the rage this Christmas. A whopping 43% of potential gift-givers are scouring the internet for themed socks and hoodies — because nothing says holiday spirit like a cozy sweater featuring your favorite altcoin.

  • Coin vouchers: 42% are considering these as gifts.
  • Crypto books: 35% are thinking about educational resources.
  • Nonfungible tokens (NFTs): About a third are exploring the idea of gifting digital art or collectibles.

Real Stories, Real Gift-Giving

Justin El-Sheikh, an 18-year-old high-school graduate from Melbourne, is leading the charge. He’s on a mission to introduce his friends to the world of cryptocurrencies by setting them up with their wallets and a bit of Bitcoin. “Heaps of my friends hear about crypto and want to get involved but don’t know how to start. It’s a fun and thoughtful present idea,” he shared. Aww, nothing like a little Bitcoin to keep the holiday spirit alive!

More Than Just a Trend

According to Karl Mohan, general manager for Asia-Pacific at Crypto.com, this enthusiasm reflects a growing acceptance of digital currency as a part of everyday transactions. He noted, “Australians are clearly very keen to adopt cryptocurrencies and integrate their use into day-to-day spending.” And while we can’t all be gifting crypto this year, it’s clear that some Aussies are making it a tradition.

The Bigger Picture

In the context of broader trends, another survey earlier found that one in six Australians now own cryptocurrency, totaling an impressive $8 billion. With 9% owning Bitcoin, 8% Ethereum, and 5% Dogecoin, Australia is indeed a key player in the crypto landscape. As Crypto.com’s marketing campaign featuring Matt Damon recently launched, it’s evident that the cryptocurrency wave is just getting started.
