Beijing Defeats Shenzhen: The Rise of China’s Blockchain Capital

Beijing Tops the Blockchain Rankings

In a surprising twist that would make any plot twist enthusiast proud, Beijing has officially been crowned as China’s leading blockchain city, according to the 2020 Chinese Blockchain Innovation Rankings. At the recent China International Fair for Trade in Services Summit, Beijing achieved a whopping score of 99.82, leaving its rival, Shenzhen, trailing with a respectable yet overshadowed 91.2. Who knew blockchain could spark such fierce competition?

Shanghai: The Underdog

While Beijing takes the crown, let’s not forget Shanghai, which placed third with a score of 88. Despite being one of East Asia’s most formidable business capitals, even Shanghai couldn’t quite crack the code to catch up. Think of it as the ultimate sibling rivalry where one sibling shoots for the stars while the other is still figuring out how to fold a paper airplane.

The City’s Blockchain Strategy

The municipal government of Beijing isn’t just resting on its laurels; it has rolled out a meticulous 20-point plan aiming to advance the development and integration of distributed ledger technologies (DLT). This ambitious plan seeks to position Beijing not only as a national player but also as a global hub for blockchain technology.

A Culture of Innovation

What fuels this meteoric rise? According to the Beijing Fair, both Beijing and Shanghai owe their rankings to robust research and development (R&D) efforts, industry growth, and a public keen on blockchain technology. Let’s face it, when public enthusiasm runs as high as some of those skyscrapers, innovation is bound to happen!

Shenzhen: A Blockchain Pioneer

On the flip side of the coin, Shenzhen has made its own mark as a trailblazer in blockchain adoption within the business sector. Despite being bested in the rankings, Shenzhen’s efforts in applying blockchain in finance have set a solid foundation for further growth. It may not have won this round, but don’t count Shenzhen out from future battles!

Future Outlook

According to the Beijing Blockchain Innovation Development Action Plan 2020–2022, the city is striving to become a frontrunner in both private blockchain innovation and public DLT implementation by the end of next year. With a vision this grand, Beijing seems determined to shape the landscape of blockchain not just in China, but globally. Will we see Shenzhen supersede Beijing again? Only time— and a bit more blockchain magic—will tell!
