Binance’s Legal Tug-of-War: Potential Lawsuit Against Checkout.com Unveiled

The Legal Showdown

Binance is gearing up for what could be a knock-down, drag-out legal brawl with its former payment provider, Checkout.com. This saga started on August 18 when a Binance spokesperson hinted at the prospect of legal action stemming from letters sent by Checkout.com regarding their severed ties with the crypto exchange.

Checkout.com’s Reasons for Termination

Guillaume Pousaz, the big cheese over at Checkout.com, reportedly ended the relationship on August 11, citing concerns over compliance and regulatory actions against Binance. He expressed worries primarily around Anti-Money Laundering and sanctions compliance—no small potatoes in the financial world. While Binance disagreed with Checkout’s reasoning, they’re still in the legal brainstorming phase.

Impact on Binance Services

The fallout from this breakup resulted in the untimely shutdown of Binance Connect on August 16, a service that launched back in March 2022 to facilitate fiat-to-crypto transactions. It was a bridge between the crypto and traditional finance realms, enabling seamless exchanges involving over 50 cryptocurrencies. If you think missing those transactions is sad, just wait until you hear about the $2 billion Checkout once processed for Binance monthly!

A Series of Unfortunate Events

It seems like Binance can’t catch a break recently. The exchange has faced a series of setbacks as multiple banking partners have abandoned ship. Just this June, Binance unexpectedly lost its euro banking partner, Paysafe Payment Solutions, and its Australian arm was cut off from their banking network without warning. Talk about being left high and dry!

Looking Towards the Future

Despite the challenges, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao is eyeing potential opportunities, such as acquiring a bank to stabilize their operations. The CEO remarked during a recent interview that these turbulent times could prompt unexpected, perhaps even audacious, moves in the financial arena.
