BitPay Faces Backlash Over Blocked Donations
Recently, BitPay, a well-known cryptocurrency payment processor, found itself in hot water again. This time, it was accused of blocking donations to Hong Kong. Tom Grundy, the founder of Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP), took to social media on September 11 to voice his frustration. He revealed that BitPay had inexplicably ceased to pass on donor funds, leading to quite an uproar.

Since 2015, HKFP has been accepting Bitcoin (BTC) donations and previously processed nearly 15,000 HKD (about $1,900) through BitPay. However, for the last three weeks, the donation process has been blocked entirely. According to Grundy, BitPay blamed delays in the fiat banking system, failing to communicate effectively with concerned customers.
Grundy wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts: “Never use @BitPay, folks. Truly the worst experience you can imagine — poor reputation, abysmal communication, horrible customer service, *very* high fees. Almost any alternative will be better.” Strong words from a founder who relies on these funds for operational support!
BitPay’s Ominous History
BitPay’s reputation has been increasingly marred by various controversies. From freezing payments to mishandling major wallets, the company has consistently faced scrutiny.
