The New Age of Weddings
Who needs a church or a beach when you can tie the knot on the blockchain? That’s exactly what a young couple from Pune, India, decided to do. Shruti Nair and Anil Narasipuram took their digital love story to a whole new level by hosting what they called a “blockchain wedding.” In case you’re wondering, yes, they had a digital priest and yes, it was all very legit.
How It All Began
Anil was inspired by reports of others around the globe doing similar blockchain weddings. “I read articles about it and thought, why not?” he shared. And if you think he’s the only one on this digital matrimony train, let’s not forget social media influencer Rebecca Kacherginsky, who famously married on the blockchain and documented the experience. Clearly, love knows no bounds—or browsers.
A Ceremony Unlike Any Other
Instead of traditional wedding venues, the couple opted for an online ceremony. They were joined by their ‘digital priest,’ Anoop Pakki, who minted their wedding vows as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) right there on the Ethereum blockchain. Anil explained, “After reading our vows and confirming the transaction, we became husband and wife!” A little ETH gas fee—approximately $35—was the price of digital love.
Vows of the Digital Age
Rather than the cliché confessions of undying love, the couple read vows that were refreshingly realistic:
- “We won’t make any big promises…”
- “…we hope to grow our understanding of each other…”
- “…we will be by each other’s side, hand in hand…
