Chainalysis, a leading blockchain analytics firm, has announced the strategic acquisition of the artificial intelligence-powered fraud detection startup, Alterya. The acquisition, completed for $150 million according to a Business Insider report, aims to bolster Chainalysis’ capabilities in combating crypto-related fraud and scams.

Enhancing Fraud Detection in Cryptocurrency

Alterya, known for its advanced AI technology, assists in pre-emptively identifying scammers, thus protecting users before potential fraud occurs. Having collaborated with major cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance and Coinbase, Alterya aids in monitoring over $8 billion worth of transactions, protecting more than 100 million users globally.

Strategic Growth and Industry Collaboration

Located in Tel Aviv, Alterya raised $9.8 million in seed funding from prominent venture capital firms such as Y Combinator, Battery Ventures, NFX, and Nyca. This funding underscores the startup’s significant potential in AI-driven fraud prevention within the crypto sector.

Chainalysis’ Recent Acquisitions and Partnerships

This acquisition follows Chainalysis’s recent purchase of Hexagate, a web3 security platform, and a partnership agreement with AlixPartners, aimed at strengthening its crypto compliance and tracing services. With these strategic moves, Chainalysis is positioned to offer comprehensive, real-time fraud protection and enhanced KYC fraud detection services to exchanges, blockchain platforms, and wallet providers.

The acquisition of Alterya arrives at a crucial time, as the crypto industry faced over $3 billion in losses to hackers and scammers in 2024 alone. The rise of generative AI technology poses new challenges, with the FBI warning that scammers are increasingly using AI to create sophisticated fraudulent schemes that are harder to detect.
