Damus Faces Apple App Store Removal Over Bitcoin Tipping Feature: A Crypto Showdown

Estimated read time 2 min read

Damus, the decentralized social media app, is facing a potential shutdown on the Apple App Store due to its Bitcoin tipping feature known as “Zaps.” On June 13, the app’s creators revealed a warning letter from Apple stating that they would remove the app in 14 days because of this Bitcoin tipping functionality.

What’s the Zaps Controversy?

The Zaps feature was designed to let users tip content creators in Bitcoin, made possible through the integration of the Lightning Network widget. Although Apple claims that tips must use its in-app purchase system, the Damus team argues that they strictly facilitate peer-to-peer transactions, similar to popular services like Venmo and Cash App.

Apple’s Policy Dilemma

According to Apple’s guidelines, any tipping feature is restricted unless it uses their in-app purchase model, regardless of whether it is optional. Apple insists that the potential for users to monetize their content through tips makes the feature unacceptable. It’s a fascinating contradiction, especially since Apple previously approved an app with Bitcoin tipping called “Game of Birds” back in 2015.

Implications for Decentralized Platforms

The developers behind Damus are calling this a “watershed moment” for decentralized platforms, highlighting the significant ramifications for peer-to-peer services if Apple’s decision stands. They believe it sends a message that decentralized apps might face tough scrutiny and restrictions from major tech companies.

A Call for Fairness

Many in the crypto community are scratching their heads over why Twitter’s tipping feature is fine while Damus is being treated differently. Notably, one Nostr creator, known as Walker on Twitter, pointed out that Damus is not selling digital goods, thus questioning Apple’s rationale for enforcing such a policy. Could it be that Apple is just trying to protect its interests in the tech industry?

The Bigger Picture

With Bitcoin tipping gaining traction across platforms like Twitter and Reddit, the question arises: Is Apple trying to play gatekeeper in the world of crypto? The social media landscape is evolving, and as more users demand decentralized solutions, we may witness a clash of titans between traditional tech companies and the rising tide of decentralized finance. As the Berlin Wall fell for many, will it be time for gatekeepers like Apple to rethink their control over social currency?
