Devcon Delayed Again: What’s Next for the Ethereum Community?

The Ongoing Story of Devcon Delays

In a twist that feels all too familiar, Devcon—a hallmark gathering for Ethereum enthusiasts—has once again postponed its highly anticipated event. This time, the decision comes straight from the Ethereum Foundation’s digital boardroom, where uncertainty about the coronavirus pandemic is leading the charge. Originally slated for an August debut in Bogota, the team decided that a delay is the more responsible course of action.

Why the Delay?

The Foundation’s announcement included a heartfelt acknowledgment of the challenges involved: “We want to make sure we do this responsibly and that as many people as possible are able to make the trip from all around the world, which seems unlikely by early August.” They truly seem to understand that we don’t want a half-full room of awkward people sitting six feet apart while trying to discuss the future of decentralized finance!

Hope on the Horizon

And while they’re keeping their cards close to their chests, the team hinted at a potential new date on the radar. “While nothing is guaranteed given the ongoing pandemic, we’re hopeful that a new date announcement is possible soon,” they said. It seems like they’re cautiously optimistic as COVID-19 vaccines roll out and pandemic-related trends show signs of improvement. So, let’s cross our fingers and hope it’s not another false alarm!

Other Ethereum Events to Watch For

In the meantime, the Ethereum community won’t be left high and dry. The Foundation has promised that other Ethereum-themed gatherings are still on the summer slate, including the upcoming EthCC event in France, which will take place in July. Talk about a plot twist—we can still experience the Ethereum magic, just perhaps not in the grand style of Devcon!

History of Devcon: A Look Back

To appreciate how far we’ve come, it’s worth noting that Devcon VI was originally postponed back in May 2020. The last in-person shindig, Devcon V, unfolded in October 2019 in Osaka, drawing a lively crowd of around 3,000 attendees. Just think about all the great ideas and connections that emerged during those bustling days! It’s a tough time for the conference circuit, but the passion in the Ethereum community never wavers.

What’s Next?

The future may be uncertain, but the Ethereum Foundation promises to keep the eager crowd in the loop about ticketing and speaker applications as soon as the new dates are finalized. Who knows? Maybe this unexpected intermission will lead to an even better celebration of all things Ethereum when the time finally comes.
