Discord Hack Puts the Buzz in Beeple’s NFT Community – 38 ETH Vanishes!

The Great Beeple Discord Heist

In the latest twist of the wild West that is the NFT world, an administrative account for Beeple’s official Discord channel was compromised, leaving a trail of confusion and significant losses. Overnight, users became unwitting participants in a fake NFT drop that resulted in an estimated 38 Ether (ETH) going the way of the dodo. Clearly, not everything that glitters in the world of digital art is gold.

Security? What Security?

Imagine the shock when an admin going by the name “Multi” frantically shared the news that their account had fallen victim to hackers, even with two-factor authentication firmly in place. It’s a scenario that is like throwing a party only to find a thief walking out with your birthday cake. The impersonator brazenly masqueraded as Multi and even the official Beeple Announcements Bot, luring community members to a fraudulent NFT drop on Nifty Gateway.

Prepping for Discounts: The User Experience

The hype was palpable, as the community anticipated a low-priced drop following Beeple’s recent successful auction. The last time such an opportunity arose, users snagged NFTs for as little as a dollar! This time, however, the stakes were considerably higher and the consequences, far more costly. Member “NFT Simon” saw the announcement and, without hesitation, was already toying with his MetaMask wallet, ready to snag a deal. A bit too eager, you might say.

The Regret

For Simon, the moment he saw the tweet fly across his screen was electric. “I didn’t blink twice,” he reflected. So, he dove headfirst into minting what he thought were Beeple’s coveted NFTs. But after making six purchases, his excitement fizzled out faster than a soda left open overnight—he couldn’t see the NFTs in his Nifty account. And the comedy of errors just got worse.

The Shock of Revelation

Instead of new digital art pieces, he was met with chaos in the Discord channel, with explicit GIFs flying around like confetti. When the dust settled, Multi managed to regain control of their account, but by then, the hacker had already made off with a significant chunk of ETH. Users were left watching the hacker cash out what little remained of their hard-earned crypto.

Community Reactions: A Mixed Bag

Responses within the Discord group were about as varied as the NFTs being minted. Some users went into a zen-like calm, trusting Beeple would resolve the matter swiftly, while others were caught in a web of regret, bemoaning their impulsiveness. Notably, NFT Simon shared his apprehension in wishing he could swap his six rogue Beeple NFTs for a refund. “I still don’t own a Beeple. I know he once stood up for the community, but will he do it again?”

Beeple’s Response—or Lack Thereof

Meanwhile, the renowned artist’s official account remained eerily quiet besides a pinned message that advised newcomers to avoid hasty purchases. “To everyone new,” it read, “please know I will never be like HEY QUICK BUY THIS!!!!” Not quite the heartfelt reassurance users were hoping for, leading some to call for a more thoughtful response to this alarming security breach.

Lessons Learned

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerability of digital accounts, particularly where valuable assets like NFTs are involved. As the community reflects on this disturbing breach, users are reminded to always stay vigilant. In this fast-paced world, FOMO can sometimes lead you right into a hacker’s trap.
