Connecting the Dots in Cargo Logistics
In a groundbreaking move, Global Container Terminals (GCT) has partnered with Maersk and IBM’s TradeLens, introducing blockchain technology to streamline operations in North America’s shipping industry. Mark your calendars, folks! As of October 17th, GCT plans to roll out this innovative solution across its four terminals, enhancing visibility and efficiency in the cargo supply chain.
The Four Terminal Expansion
GCT’s initiative includes terminals located in Canada and the U.S. The standout stars are:
- GCT Vanterm
- GCT Deltaport – Canada’s largest marine terminal
- GCT Bayonne
- GCT New York
With these powerhouses in play, GCT aims to connect all supply chain participants, creating a secure interconnection among ocean carriers, cargo owners, and railways.
TradeLens: A Heavyweight Class
Since its inception in the summer of 2018, TradeLens has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, having secured participation from five of the world’s six largest ocean carriers. This move isn’t just a small increment in shipping logistics; it’s like adding a jet engine to a bicycle. By September 2019, TradeLens reported a whopping 100+ organizations and 55 ports and terminals utilizing its platform.
New Kids on the Block
In an exciting twist, the platform has recently welcomed two shipping behemoths into its fold: the Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC), renowned as the world’s second-largest shipping entity, and CMA CGM, the fourth-largest. If that doesn’t scream ‘serious business,’ we don’t know what does! Not to be outdone, Thailand’s Customs Department is also hopping on the bandwagon, using TradeLens for enhanced tracking of shipping activities in Thai ports.
Why This Matters
With GCT’s integration into TradeLens, we’re looking at a potential overhaul in how the shipping industry operates. Enhanced visibility on cargo movement means fewer hiccups in the supply chain and happier customers. Who wouldn’t want that? On top of that, the focus on security between supply chain members is not just a trend; it’s becoming the norm. We can truly say we’re sailing towards a future where shipping is quicker, safer, and more efficient.
