With 88% of the nation’s power generated from hydropower, Norwegian miners contribute about 1% of the total Bitcoin hash rate. His operation primarily uses hydropower, arguing it’s one of the most efficient methods to keep things running smoothly. As he aptly puts it, “Harnessing hydroelectric power has remained an effective mechanism to maintain the most efficient mining possible.” Talk about being thirsty for clean energy!

Despite cries that “cryptocurrency is unsustainable by design,” those in the industry believe that adopting clean energy can lead to a sustainable model. It seems that Bitcoin mining is like trying to juggle flaming torches—harder than it seems! Daniel Batten, an environmentalist and tech entrepreneur, argues that the industry creates incentive for building renewable energy plants, which helps decarbonize power grids. But will it be enough? He raises a concerning question: is Bitcoin mining demanding enough electricity to spur the necessary grid updates?

With operations in Texas exploring flexible data centers to reduce grid stress during peak periods, the future looks promising yet complicated.
