IranRescueBit: A New Hope for Charitable Cryptocurrency Donations in Iran

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Birth of IranRescueBit

In a fascinating blend of technology and humanitarian science, a group of volunteer cryptocurrency developers in Iran has launched a revolutionary platform named IranRescueBit. This platform emerges as a beacon of hope for regions struck by destructive flooding, enabling charitable donations via popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC).

A Response to Natural Disasters

Following catastrophic floods that claimed 70 lives and displaced many in 13 provinces, particularly in Fars, Lorestan, Golestan, and Hamedan, IranRescueBit aims to gather resources swiftly. While the Iranian government remains outside this initiative, the platform fills a critical gap in humanitarian aid.

Cryptocurrency: A Shield Against Sanctions

The ingenious aspect of IranRescueBit is its ability to bypass American sanctions restricting financial support to organizations like the Iranian Red Crescent Society, a key player in disaster relief. Donors can rest easy knowing that their contributions won’t be held up by bureaucratic roadblocks.

Decentralization Works in Favor of Charities

Hamed Salehi, the executive director, emphasized how the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies allows for seamless transactions without needing a central authority to confirm them. This means no more waiting for paperwork or government approvals—just direct help where it’s needed most.

A One-Month Fundraising Drive

IranRescueBit aims to run a month-long campaign, collecting cryptocurrencies before converting them into Iranian rials through local exchanges. Once the funds are ready, they will be funneled to the Iranian Red Crescent Society to aid those affected by the floods. As Salehi stated, “We hope that IranRescueBit can turn into a platform that could be employed either by the community or by the IRCS should the need ever arise again in the future.” A solid goal, indeed!

The Global Trend of Blockchain Charity

IranRescueBit isn’t the only platform seeking to innovate charity through blockchain technology. Recently, South Korean firm SK C&C unveiled its own blockchain-based donation system. With a twist—donors can earn tokens to shop for items in return for their generosity. Sounds like a win-win, right? But, like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar, they’re facing regulatory roadblocks that could delay their launch.

Challenges Ahead

While both platforms highlight the benefits of blockchain for charitable giving, they underscore a crucial challenge: regulations and the bureaucratic landscape can turn into thorny bushes. Lee Sun-min from SK C&C noted that the interplay between company aspirations and regulations poses significant hurdles, making it evident that even the most innovative ideas need a conducive environment to flourish.
