Stanchfield revealed that his email and phone account were hijacked with shocking ease. In a blog post shared on New Year’s Eve, he described the tense moments following the breach. “An attacker was able to activate a new phone under my PIN-protected Verizon account,” he wrote. Apparently, nobody told the hacker that holiday cheer doesn’t involve telecommunication theft.

As the clock ticked towards midnight on Christmas night, KeepKey’s engineers found themselves in a conversation with the very perpetrator attempting to wreak havoc. Thankfully, all compromised accounts, with the exception of Twitter, are now back in KeepKey’s hands.
Policies Reinvented
In the wake of the incident, KeepKey is vowing a complete overhaul of its data practices. Stanchfield assured users that such an unauthorized access scenario won’t happen again: “The manner in which my email was compromised is no longer possible for myself and the entire company.” A new data retention policy is on the horizon, promising increased security against future threats.
A Hacker’s Bounty
Instead of negotiating with the hacker’s demand for 30 BTC, KeepKey flipped the script, throwing down an offer of the same amount for information leading to the hacker’s capture.
