Arthur Hayes, born in 1985, certainly didn’t follow a conventional path. Growing up and dreaming big, he decided to take the long route—literally. Moving doors to Hong Kong, he brought with him a shiny Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the prestigious Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, it would be hard to find him meditating under a coconut tree, but don’t let that fool you; this guy has been hustling since day one!
Climbing the Investment Banking Ladder
Arthur’s journey kicked off in 2008 when he took a plunge into investment banking in the bustling heart of Hong Kong. His first adventure was as an ETF market maker at Deutsche Bank. Imagine this: within three years, he was pivotal in rolling out the X-trackers ETF product across Asia. Under his watchful eye, assets under management skyrocketed from a humble $0 to a jaw-dropping $1 billion.
Citibank and the ETF Trading Boom
In 2011, Arthur decided to swap his Deutsche Bank suit for a Citibank blazer. As an ETF and Delta 1 trader, he managed ETF trading books while throwing in some equity index arbitrage, especially focusing on the ever-volatile Chinese market. Talk about diving into the deep end! His trading expertise didn’t stop there; he also dabbled in the FX non-deliverable forward scene. This was no ordinary 9-to-5 job; Arthur was living on the edge—financially speaking, of course.
A Love Affair with Cryptocurrencies
When spring rolled around in 2013, Arthur had his first rendezvous with cryptocurrency. After reading Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper, he became enchanted by the future of Bitcoin. Starting with spot and derivatives trading was just the beginning. Like a kid in a candy shop, he showcased his talent by arbitraging between different spot exchanges and eventually became a broker assisting others in their Bitcoin buy/sell escapades.
The Birth of BitMEX
Fast forward to January 2014, when Arthur teamed up with two partners to launch BitMEX (Bitcoin Mercantile Exchange). Picture this as a fancy virtual playground for those eager to play in the world of cryptocurrency derivatives. Their mission? To become the world’s most advanced derivatives exchange. And boy, did they aim high!
Involvement in the Bitcoin Community
Arthur Hayes is more than just a trader; he’s on a mission. He’s all about spreading the word about Bitcoin and propelling traditional finance principles right into the heart of the cryptocurrency space. As a founding member of the Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong, he’s actively engaged in creating a buzz around Bitcoin and educating people about its potential. The passion? You bet it’s contagious!
