Mt. Gox Creditors Have Until January 2023 to Register for Repayments

Registration and Selection Deadline for Mt. Gox Creditors Set

Creditors of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox now have until January 2023 to register and choose a repayment method as part of the ongoing effort to compensate them for the losses incurred following the exchange’s collapse in 2014. This development is part of a rehabilitation plan initiated after a petition in 2018 aimed at reimbursing affected users.

Repayment Methods Available

As per an announcement from trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi dated October 6, creditors must select their preferred repayment method and register their details in an online claims filing system by January 10, 2023. Options for repayment include:

  • Bank remittance
  • Fund transfer service providers
  • Cryptocurrency exchanges
  • Custodians

Kobayashi urged creditors to complete the necessary registration to avoid complications, warning that failure to register would limit their options for receiving payments.

Role of Bitstamp in the Repayment Process

In a positive development for creditors, crypto exchange Bitstamp announced its participation in the repayment plan, adding support to assist Mt. Gox creditors in receiving their compensations. Bitstamp’s involvement highlights the collaborative efforts from various firms to aid those affected by the exchange’s failure.

Ongoing Developments and Future Actions

Kobayashi clarified that either his office or associated third-party entities will verify the identities of the creditors to ensure that the names and addresses match those entitled to compensation. While it remains unclear whether the repayment plan will allow creditors to receive Bitcoin (BTC) or fiat currency, reports suggest that the date for fund distribution will be confirmed after the January 10 deadline.

Background on Mt. Gox

Before its collapse, Mt. Gox was one of the largest and most popular cryptocurrency exchanges, and the losses suffered by users are estimated to be in the billions. In October 2021, a majority of affected users approved a draft rehabilitation plan aimed at facilitating compensation for their losses. Following judicial approval, Kobayashi indicated his intention to make certain amendments to the rehabilitation plan, which he asserted would not adversely affect creditors seeking remittance.

The upcoming deadlines and growing clarity about the repayment methods mark an important step toward resolution for the victims of the Mt. Gox incident, allowing them to potentially reclaim some of their losses from the infamous exchange’s downfall.
