As Gabriela Ramos, the assistant director-general for social and human science at UNESCO succinctly put it, this isn’t merely a technological discussion; it’s fundamentally a conversation about the type of world every citizen dreams of inhabiting. Ramos highlights, “To shape the technological development of AI, we need effective governance frameworks underpinned by the ethical and moral values we all hold dear.” Think of it as giving AI a set of moral guidelines akin to a parenting handbook, but for machines.

Interestingly, UNESCO isn’t a novice in this arena. In November 2021, they laid down ethical guidelines for AI, which received the nod of approval from all member states. This foundational work paves the way for further discussions and best practice recommendations.

Following the passage of the AI Act in the European Parliament in June 2023, which establishes a robust set of regulations for AI development in the EU, the conversation around AI continues to heat up. The bill, proposed earlier in April, has garnered overwhelming support, ensuring ongoing negotiations between member states and parliament to nail down the final rules.
