Nigeria’s Ambitious Grants for AI Startups: A Leap into the Future

The Big Announcement

In a move that’s sure to stir the pot in the tech world, Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, announced on Friday, October 13, 2023, that a whopping 5 million naira (around $6,444) will be up for grabs for 45 AI-focused startups and researchers. Talk about getting your big break!

The Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme

This funding isn’t just a generous handout; it’s part of the newly unveiled Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme aimed at turbocharging the use of AI to lift the Nigerian economy off the starting line. Areas of focus for the scheme include:

  • Agriculture
  • Education and Workforce
  • Finance
  • Governance
  • Healthcare
  • Utility and Sustainability

Building Teams for Success

But hold your horses! Not just anyone can waltz in and snatch up that sweet cash. To be eligible, teams must form a consortium made up of a startup or tech company, coupled with a researcher—preferably from a Nigerian university or a foreign expert. It’s like they say: teamwork makes the dream work!

Submission Guidelines

Got an innovative idea? Great! Applicants are required to submit a research proposal in line with the Ministry’s AI focus areas. Moreover, a thorough project proposal demonstrating the economic impact in Nigeria is a must. Oh, and don’t forget to showcase your past awesomeness in research or entrepreneurship, as you’ll need to publish at least one peer-reviewed article within a year of receiving the grant. No pressure, right?

The Clock is Ticking

The application period kicked off on October 13, 2023, and ends on November 15, 2023. So, if you’re dreaming of transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape through AI, better get cracking. A panel of AI experts will be on the lookout, sifting through proposals to find the next big idea. And let’s face it—everyone loves a good underdog story!
