Drawing inspiration from the success of Bitcoin in El Salvador, where a localized “Bitcoin Beach” initiative led to national recognition and acceptance of the currency, Nourou was determined to replicate this model back home. His enthusiasm wasn’t dampened by the absence of Bitcoin adoption in Senegal but rather fueled his drive to introduce the concept. He recognized that a similar movement could garner real change in his community.
Building Bitcoin Senegal: The First Steps
Within weeks of launching Bitcoin Senegal, Nourou took significant strides. By conducting over 18 educational talks, he succeeded in introducing Bitcoin to various local businesses — from restaurants to surf camps and game shops. These efforts caught the attention of curious locals eager to embrace the new financial technology.
Getting Merchants on Board
Located in Les Almadies, a trendy district known for its ex-pat community, Nourou focused his efforts on reaching out to beach bars, restaurants, and barber shops. His dedication to “day or night” support created trust and showed that he was genuinely invested in their success. One restaurant, Praïnha, proudly displayed its Bitcoin acceptance status, marking a significant milestone in his mission.
Challenges Ahead: Education and Volatility
Despite the tremendous progress, Nourou faces challenges that threaten the pace of Bitcoin adoption. The volatility of Bitcoin and low literacy rates among potential users make educating the masses a daunting task. He provides vendors with advice, suggesting they implement a 10% markup for Bitcoin transactions to hedge against fluctuations.
Engaging Through Informative Content
To tackle the knowledge gap, Nourou launched a YouTube channel in Wolof, the primary language of Senegal, to make Bitcoin education accessible to those unfamiliar with the concept. This approach is crucial in breaking down barriers, as many locals may find English-based resources intimidating or unhelpful.
The Future Looks Bright
Nourou’s ambitions don’t stop at local restaurants. He envisions a broad network of Bitcoin-accepting businesses across Senegal, hoping to establish 20 by mid-2022 as he builds the country’s first proprietary Bitcoin exchange to enhance the ecosystem further. With aspirations as grand as competing with established platforms while fostering Bitcoin awareness, Nourou is laying the foundation for a financially transformed Senegal.
