On October 4, the crypto exchange OKX found itself in hot water, as the Russian state media monitoring service, Roskomnadzor, decided to block its website. They claimed this drastic action was taken at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office due to the dissemination of “unreliable socially significant information of a financial nature.” Talk about a serious accusation over some digital coins!

Why the Block?

According to Roskomnadzor, OKX had been playing fast and loose with the law, publishing information connected to financial pyramids and financial services by unauthorized individuals. In layman’s terms, they were accused of conducting illegal business. Luckily, for the tech-savvy, accessing OKX may still be possible using a VPN. Just don’t tell them we said that!

Navigating the VPN Dilemma

While VPNs offer a way to bypass this blockade, there’s a catch. The administration of OKX’s Russian-language Discord channel warned fans, “We do not recommend using a VPN when accessing OKX as this will trigger our risk controls and can lead to a ban of our account.” It’s kind of like trying to sneak a snack into a movie theater—risky and not always worth it.

History of Banned Sites in Russia

This is not the first rodeo for crypto exchange websites in Russia. Similar instances have occurred before. For example, Binance was blocked between September 2020 and January 2021 before a regional court decided to reverse the decision. In 2020, six crypto news websites faced a similar fate, but some managed to escape the cold grip of Roskomnadzor’s banhammer.

Founded in China and now based in the sunny Seychelles, OKX hasn’t let Western sanctions against Russia dampen its spirit. Unlike its counterparts, it reportedly turned a deaf ear to South Korean authorities’ request to freeze accounts linked to Terraform Labs’ co-founder. The exchange is also known for its lavish sponsorships, including those for soccer giants Manchester City and a dash of auto racing glamour.
