Cermaq and Labeyrie Dive into Blockchain
In a splashy announcement, Cermaq, a big player in salmon farming, has teamed up with Labeyrie, the connoisseurs of smoked salmon, to incorporate IBM’s cutting-edge cloud blockchain technology. This partnership aims to reel in customer trust by providing transparency in the supply chain. Gone are the days of questioning where your salmon came from — now, it’s as simple as scanning a QR code!
From Egg to Table: Traceability at Its Best
Thanks to this newfound tech, consumers can now uncover the fascinating journey of their fish. Each Cermaq salmon product is adorned with a CV and QR code that reveals:
- The fish’s origin
- The hatch date
- Freshwater facility information
- Size at transfer to seawater
- Seawater farming details
- Health records including vaccinations
- Feeding practices
- Harvest date
It’s basically the fish version of Instagram — except instead of flexing a fabulous vacation, it’s strutting its health records.
The Thirst for Transparency
As consumers become more health-conscious and eco-aware, the demand for food transparency grows. Brede Løfsgaard, sales director of Cermaq Norway, pointed out that this initiative was largely driven by customer desires for transparency in food sources. Who wouldn’t want to know if their salmon was swimming in style before landing on their plate?
Blockchain: The New Wave in Food Supply Chains
This trend isn’t just swimming in the salmon industry. Globally, food manufacturers are utilizing blockchain to elevate supply chain transparency. For instance, in the same month, giants like Carrefour and Nestlé, also jumped in the blockchain waters to track the origin of milk-based infant formulas using IBM’s Food Trust platform. This innovation isn’t just about keeping tabs; it’s about building confidence in product quality.
A Taste of Future Logistics
Logistics has also caught the blockchain wave. American logistics giant UPS delivered a blockchain-verified beef shipment from Kansas to Japan, thanks to collaboration with agritech firm HerdX. They opened a new chapter in food logistics by utilizing blockchain packaging technology to ensure traceability of beef. So, whether it’s salmon or steak, blockchain is making sure your dinner is credible!
