Revolutionizing Travel: The First Web3 Hackathon for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Estimated read time 3 min read

A New Era in Travel Innovation

In the heart of Zug, Switzerland, an exciting new chapter unfolded in the travel industry this September. DER Touristik Online, partnering with the Lufthansa Group and the web3 startup Chain4Travel, hosted the very first web3 & travel hackathon. This thrilling event, held in Frankfurt, was all about brainstorming future tech solutions to elevate travel and sustainability. Spoiler alert: they mostly didn’t need caffeine to power through the coding binge!

Hackathon Highlights

During this exhilarating competition, developers rolled up their sleeves to devise a tokenization platform that would help in the consumption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using the Camino Network—a pioneering platform from the web3 travel ecosystem. With the clock ticking and adrenaline pumping, teams flexed their creative muscles and came up with innovative concepts in a matter of days!

Meet the Contenders

  • DER Touristik Online (DTO): A startup that transformed online travel sales with around 9,200 employees on its roster.
  • Lufthansa Group: A giant in the aviation world with over 100,000 employees and a revenue that could probably rival some small nations.
  • Chain4Travel: The spirited startup with a vision to marry travel with blockchain.

Sustainable Travels, Thriving Earth

In a major step towards greener tourism, DER Touristik Online became the first major operator to acquire SAF from Lufthansa. This initiative impressively cuts down the carbon footprint of travel by a staggering 80%. Finally, vacationers can feel a little less guilty about their flight and enjoy that extra cocktail with less eco-anxiety!

And the Winner Is…?

The winning team delivered an impressive Proof of Concept that involved a loyalty program integrated with “Dertorium” tokens. Imagine a world where these green tokens not only track your sustainable activities but also enhance your vacation rewards. As Ralf Usbeck, CEO of Chain4Travel, noted, this approach highlighted what makes blockchain appealing—a serious game changer!

From Novices to Pros

Surprisingly, most participants had no previous experience with web3 tech. But with a little tech magic from BytePitch and teamwork, they were able to present functional prototypes on the Camino Network’s Columbus testnet in less than four days. It seems that hacking isn’t just for movie montages after all!

The Path Forward

The journey is just beginning. The Camino Network Foundation stands out as a non-profit dedicated to building a blockchain ecosystem specifically for the travel industry. Now, travelers can not only embark on new adventures but potentially contribute to a sustainable future. Who knew your vacation could actually help the planet!
