Tascombank and Stellar Unite for Electronic Hryvnia Pilot in Ukraine

Launch of the Electronic Hryvnia Pilot

Tascombank, a historic player in Ukraine’s banking scene, is stepping into the digital age with its new pilot program for an electronic version of their currency, the hryvnia. This initiative, made possible through a partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) and fintech firm Bitt, aims to leverage blockchain technology for a smoother financial experience.

The Role of Regulatory Bodies

With the watchful eyes of the National Bank of Ukraine and the Ministry of Digital Transformation (MDT), this pilot dispels any fears of a Wild West financial situation. Oleksandr Bornyakov, deputy minister at MDT, made it clear that this is not just another tech experiment. It’s a strategic move to enhance the nation’s payment and financial infrastructure.

Programmable Payroll: A Game Changer

In a quirky twist, the first test of the electronic hryvnia will focus on programmable payroll for public employees working at Diia, a public IT solutions agency. Imagine getting your salary tailor-made, thanks to smart contract capabilities. Now that’s a feature many would wish for on their paychecks!

Technology and Support Behind the Initiative

Bitt’s Digital Currency Management System (DCMS) is playing the supporting role to Tascombank, equipping them with the techno-gadgets needed for securely minting and distributing the electronic hryvnia. Bitt CEO Brian Popelka affirmed how crucial this technology is to ensure safe transactions, while Denelle Dixon from SDF emphasized maintaining the flexibility of an open ledger throughout the process.

The Bigger Picture: Ukraine’s Digital Currency Aspirations

This pilot isn’t a shot in the dark. The Ukrainian government has been eyeing digital currencies for quite some time, having first partnered with SDF back in January 2021. Dixon reiterated that this pilot serves as a stepping stone into a more innovative and digitized financial ecosystem in Ukraine.
