What is the Blockchain Service Network (BSN)?
Launched in October 2019, China’s Blockchain Service Network (BSN) seeks to establish a robust global infrastructure for both private and public blockchains. Imagine a digital web stretching across cities, uniting them through blockchain technology. This ambitious project aims to propel smart cities into the digital economy, providing vital data and services through interconnected city nodes.
Milestones and Recent Developments
The BSN hit a significant milestone in April this year when it became commercially available worldwide. Backed by the State Information Center, along with tech giants from China’s communications and software sectors, the project has already drawn over 2,000 developers working on applications for water supply management, traceability, and invoicing. Who would’ve thought water could be so high-tech?
Global Challenges Ahead
Despite its impressive start, the BSN faces the giant stumbling blocks that are geopolitics and global perceptions. Market research firm Forrester predicts that initiatives tied to the Chinese state will deter enterprises from joining. It’s like throwing a party and realizing your strict parents are lurking in the corner, making potential guests uneasy. Forrester’s Martha Bennett warns that while domestic development may go smoothly, the BSN’s goals for global integration might be hampered.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Yifan He, CEO of Red Date Technology, the private operator of BSN, refutes the idea that geopolitics is hindering progress, insisting, “Half of our tech partners are from the U.S.” However, this could feel like blind optimism as concerns loom over control and access to the network. It’s akin to sharing a dessert with someone who’s completely hogging the plate!
The Future of BSN and Blockchain Technology
The BSN has two versions: BSN China focuses on permissioned blockchains, while BSN International explores permissionless ones. Many argue that while the international venture seems more of a marketing hype, it’s crucial for developers to understand the blockchain landscape. And, ironically, with restrictions in place, many developers may find it more economical to host their own nodes, rather than navigate the complexities and costs associated with BSN’s model.
China’s Blockchain Aspirations
Even amidst skepticism, Forrester claims that despite geopolitical tensions, China’s national blockchain infrastructure will go into overdrive compared to other regions. Given the streamlined decision-making processes in China, the government is likely to make quicker investments in blockchain technologies that can directly impact the masses—speeding right along while other countries are still trying to find their keys!
