The Centralization Challenge: Will Polkadot, Cosmos, and NEAR Survive the Test?

The Centralization Conundrum

A new report from non-custodial crypto asset exchange ShapeShift raises flags about the future of Polkadot, Cosmos, and NEAR. Why? Because if these platforms are branded too centralized, they could share the same fate as EOS—a lesson in blockchain growth gone wrong. The report could practically wear a warning sign: ‘Proceed with caution on centralization.’

The Scalability Showdown

In 2023, the claims from these networks about achieving scalability without sacrificing decentralization are about to be put to the ultimate test. Polkadot’s and NEAR’s token distributions appear centralized due to hefty insider allocations. This means that while they can preen about their claims, they are closer to the corporate world than they’d like to admit. Then there’s Cosmos, whose individual zones need to snag independent validators, a task that isn’t as simple as finding a parking spot in a crowded mall.

Lessons from EOS

Kent Barton, the keen mind behind the report, articulates an important truth: the perception of centralization will be decisive for which platforms rise and which fall. Take a page from EOS’s book, where signs of validator collusion dampened developer enthusiasm last year. Spoiler alert: that didn’t turnout well.

Interoperability: A Double-Edged Sword

The promise of decentralization coupled with smart contract interoperability is tantalizing. However, the report outlines that this year, the flow of value and data with minimal trust between different cryptocurrencies will be an uphill battle. Wider adoption? Sure! But it will require a drastic reduction in the complexities that make this concept feel like rocket science to everyday users.

Innovating Towards the Unknown

There’s no cookie-cutter solution for smart contracts, and each decentralized exchange (DEX) and application will have to mold itself to the distinct strengths of various platforms. However, with innovation comes risk. The infamous flash loan exploits that hit DeFi protocols in late 2020 are just the tip of the iceberg. As Barton puts it—new capabilities could pave the way for novel vulnerabilities: “Emerging blockchain ecosystems will have their own version of flash loans that risk user funds.”

The Road Ahead

Will Polkadot, Cosmos, and NEAR edge out their detractors or spiral into obscurity? As they try to balance the twin challenges of scalability and decentralization, one can only hope their developers have learned from the past and are ready to rise above into uncharted but promising territories.
