What Happened During the Hack?

Security analyst Harry Denley took to social media, waving the red flag for Beeple’s followers. Multiple tweets from the compromised account contained these scam links, promising users access to exclusive NFTs, but instead leading them straight into the hands of the cyber thieves. In just a few hours, the hackers amassed a staggering 438,000 USD in stolen digital assets – just like that!

The Bitter Taste of Phishing

The first tweet lured victims to part with 36 Ether (ETH), worth around $73,000 at that moment. The second one? A mind-blowing extraction of about 365,000 USD worth of ETH and high-profile NFTs, including dazzling names like Mutant Ape Yacht Club, VeeFriends, and Otherdeeds! If those collections had legs, they’d be running straight into the sunset.

Beeple’s Comeback

Amid the chaos, there was hope! Beeple later confirmed that he had regained control of his Twitter account, exclaiming, “ugh we’ll that was fun way to wake up,” with a hint of sarcasm, of course. He went on to remind his followers that “anything too good to be true IS A F*CKING SCAM.” Wise words, indeed.

A Recurring Nightmare

Let’s not forget, this isn’t Beeple’s first encounter with digital-bandits. Back in November 2021, a similar hack hit his Discord, where unscrupulous hackers promoted another fake NFT drop. The aftermath? Users lost around 38 ETH wrapped up in the deceit. Scammers seem to love thriving in the lucrative world of NFTs.
