Coinbase has recently released its latest transparency report, shedding light on a significant uptick in information requests from law enforcement agencies. Over the last four quarters, the exchange logged a remarkable 66% increase, with a staggering total of 12,320 requests from various countries, primarily fueled by the United States.

Where They’re Coming From
Of these requests, a notable 5,304 originated from U.S. authorities, accounting for approximately 43% of the total. The report highlighted that the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain were also significant contributors, each generating between 1,000 and 2,000 requests. Together, these four nations make up a dominating 80% of all inquiries, while requests also poured in from an impressive 57 other countries.

Spain saw a jaw-dropping increase of 940% in its requests, totaling 1,304. This rapid escalation positions Spain among six countries that more than doubled their inquiries compared to the previous year. In a surprising twist, 21 countries made requests for the very first time in the reporting period, including the Czech Republic with 104 requests.
Coinbase’s Response Strategy
Challenging Requests
As part of its operations, Coinbase doesn’t just roll over to government demands. The team, led by chief legal officer Paul Grewal, might challenge or seek to narrow the requests. The company emphasizes that they do not grant direct access to customer information. However, they do provide limited customer data, like names, IP addresses used for logins, and payment details, if such information is requested legally.
