The Big Announcement
BlueWallet has officially decided to end its custodial lightning operations by sunsetting its connection to LndHub. This means that if you’re using BlueWallet for your Bitcoin Lightning Network transactions, you’ll need to find a new way to connect to nodes. Pour one out for the custodial services—you had a good run.
Who’s Affected?
Here’s the rundown of who will and won’t be affected by the change. Spoiler alert: it’s like a game of musical chairs—and no one likes to be left standing.
- If you use BlueWallet for on-chain Bitcoin: ✅ nothing changes for you!
- If you’re using other LndHub services (like LightningTipBot, LNbits, Alby): ✅ also nothing!
- If you rely on the Lightning account hosted by BlueWallet: ⚡️ Start packing up your sats! Move your funds out before the party ends on April 30th!
No Need to Hit the Panic Button
Calle, a lightning developer, chimed in on Twitter saying, “The most important thing is that people don’t panic.” So, breathe, folks! There’s no reason to rush and withdraw your on-chain funds like it’s Black Friday. The Lightning Network is built to handle this kind of fluctuation, and jumping ship too early is just going to complicate things further.
Understanding LndHub
LndHub is basically a peacemaker that helps connect various wallets to their accounts. It’s not going anywhere, just like a good friend that hangs around after the party—still there, just in a different role. As Calle further explained, BlueWallet just doesn’t want to play host anymore. It’s focusing on promoting self-custody solutions, which sounds like a great idea, except when you’re suddenly left without a lifeboat!
What’s Next?
With the service exiting stage left, users are urged to withdraw their funds promptly. BlueWallet will still support other self-custody solutions going forward. The change might seem like a slight bump on the road toward the Lightning Network’s growth, but rest assured it aims to encourage decentralized solutions and self-custody. Remember to keep your Bitcoin amounts low when using the Lightning Network, since it comes with its risks—but aren’t all the best experiences a little experimental?
